1937:  35 of the 97 people on board of the hydrogen-filled German airship Hindenburg were killed when it burst into flames on arrival at Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA. One navy crewman were also killed on the ground.

1976:  973 people died in a result of an earthquake struck the town of Udine in northern Italy.

1992:  Marlene Dietrich, the German-born cabaret singer and Hollywood legendary star, died.

1996:  William E. Colby, former CIA director, was found dead on a riverbank near his southern Maryland vacation home. He had disappeared eight days before.

1998:  More than 150 people were killed when flood and rain washed off towns in southern Italy with mud and rocks
