Earthquake Cemetery: 1948
Earthquake Cemetery is located at Soviet Sokols
Street, north of Ashgabad. It is more like an abandoned
cemetery and in center there is a monument for the memory of 1948
earthquake. On 1:00am, October 6, 1948, in less than a minute,
Ashgabad leveled by a 9 point Richter scale earthquake and 110,000
people, more than 2/3 of its population died. For more than five
years the city was closed to outsiders while dead bodies were
being recovered.
